D Flawless sits at the very top of the GIA grading scales: the highest colour grade combined with the highest clarity grade. It is exceptionally rare, and its certificate carries undeniable prestige.
But does that make it the best diamond for an engagement ring?
In most cases, no.
After more than fifteen years spent grading and sourcing natural diamonds, I have seen how easily the desire for the “best” certificate can take precedence over the beauty of the stone itself.
A D Flawless diamond is remarkable on paper. On the hand, however, it may look no different from another carefully selected diamond costing considerably less.
WHAT DOES D FLAWLESS MEAN?
The letter D is the highest grade on the GIA colour scale. It indicates that no colour was detected when the loose diamond was examined under controlled grading conditions.
Flawless, written FL on a GIA report, is the highest clarity grade. It means that no inclusions or surface blemishes were visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification.
These grades describe rarity with great precision. They do not, on their own, describe how beautiful a diamond will be.
A diamond can receive exceptional colour and clarity grades yet still lack the proportions, balance or character I would want for an engagement ring. Conversely, a well-cut F VS1 diamond can appear beautifully white and entirely clean to the naked eye.
CAN YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN D FLAWLESS AND F VS1?
Usually, the difference is far less visible than clients expect.
D, E and F diamonds all fall within the GIA colourless range. VS1 inclusions are minor and, in a properly chosen stone, will generally not be visible without magnification.
This does not mean that every D Flawless diamond and every F VS1 diamond will look identical. The shape and size of the stone matter, as does the metal in which it will be set. Some diamond cuts reveal colour or inclusions more readily than others.
It means that when two diamonds are well chosen, the difference visible on the hand can be negligible, while the difference in price may be substantial.
That is why I never recommend a diamond from its grades alone. I look at the stone.
WHY IS A D FLAWLESS DIAMOND MORE EXPENSIVE?
Its price reflects rarity.
Very few natural diamonds meet the requirements for both a D colour and a Flawless clarity grade. Some buyers also value the satisfaction of owning the highest possible combination on a recognised grading report.
That distinction is real. It simply should not be confused with greater brilliance.
A diamond does not sparkle more because it is Flawless. Its brilliance depends primarily on the quality of its cut and the way its proportions work together. Nor will a D colour automatically give the stone greater presence once it is mounted in an engagement ring.
With a D Flawless diamond, part of the premium is therefore paid for qualities identified under gemmological grading conditions rather than for a difference that will necessarily be seen.
WOULD I CHOOSE F VS1 INSTEAD?
Very often, yes.
F VS1 is not a universal formula, and I would never recommend buying a diamond by matching two grades on a certificate. Two stones carrying the same grades can still have very different appearances.
But a carefully selected F VS1 natural diamond can offer an excellent balance. It remains within the colourless range and will normally appear clean to the naked eye. The available budget can then be directed towards the qualities that make a genuine visual difference, such as the proportions of the stone or its overall scale.
The right choice may also be E VS1, F VVS2 or another combination entirely. It depends on the individual diamond, its cut and the engagement ring being created around it.
My role as a gemmologist is not to sell the highest grades possible. It is to identify where quality remains visible and where the certificate begins to command a premium for rarity alone.
WHEN IS D FLAWLESS WORTH CHOOSING?
A D Flawless diamond can be the right choice when owning the rarest possible grade is important in itself.
Some clients want the objective top of the scale. Others are drawn to the purity of the classification or are looking for an exceptional natural diamond with a very particular certificate profile. These are perfectly legitimate reasons to choose one.
In that case, I will source a D Flawless diamond with the same attention I give to every stone, examining its proportions, brilliance and individual presence rather than relying solely on the report.
What I would never do is suggest that the grade guarantees the most beautiful diamond.
WHAT SHOULD YOU PRIORITISE FOR AN ENGAGEMENT RING?
Begin with the diamond as a whole.
The grading report is essential, but it is a technical description, not a verdict on beauty. The stone must also be examined in person, with particular attention to its cut, proportions and how it performs when it moves.
For a bespoke engagement ring made in our Paris atelier, I also consider the design in which the diamond will be set. The choice of metal, the proportions of the setting and the way the stone sits on the hand can matter more to the finished ring than moving from F to D or from VS1 to Flawless.
D Flawless is rare. It is not automatically more beautiful.
The best diamond is the one whose quality can be seen, whose character suits the ring and whose price reflects the qualities that matter to you.

Sparkle depends primarily on the diamond’s cut and proportions. A diamond with a lower clarity grade can therefore appear more brilliant than a Flawless diamond with less successful proportions.
IS F VS1 A GOOD CHOICE FOR AN ENGAGEMENT RING?
A carefully selected F VS1 natural diamond can offer an excellent balance of colour, clarity and price. It will normally appear colourless and clean to the naked eye.
It is not a universal formula. Every diamond should still be examined individually rather than selected from its certificate alone.
WHEN IS A D FLAWLESS DIAMOND WORTH BUYING?
It can be worth choosing when the rarity of the grade and the prestige of owning the top certificate combination are important to you.
If your priority is the visible beauty of the finished engagement ring, a gemmologist may recommend placing more of the budget into the individual stone’s cut, proportions or size.
